MORE ABOUT: Sports Injury Care

Whether you are a competitive athlete or someone who enjoys recreational activity, sports-related injuries are common. We understand how difficult it is to be on the sidelines, but at the ATP Clinic, we will ensure you are back to doing what you love through a strict, controlled sports injury care program that gradually will prepare you to be in the best position to safely return to your sports/activity.

Sports injuries occur due to not warming up properly, pushing the body’s limits, using inadequate equipment and having poor technique. Different sports and activities are more prone to certain injuries so it is important to be educated on risks and prevention as well as providing a rehabilitation program to get you back to the sport.

Sports-related injuries can be acute or chronic, meaning they are either the result of a sudden event or they have been developing over time. With acute injuries, the main goal is to speed the rate of recovery and to stop any further injury. In contrast, with chronic injuries, we need to assess and treat the root cause, and possibly change bad habits that may have developed over time, resulting in injury.

In the early stages of sports injury care, it is vital to control any inflammation (swelling) and minimize pain. Once the swelling and immediate injury have been dealt with, the hard work begins. The next steps involve restoring your range of motion and progressively increasing the load to build strength.

During the final stages of sports injury care, once we reach optimal strength and proper range is accomplished, it is important to build resilience in order to prevent a similar injury. Prior to returning to sport, we will educate you on the proper steps required to gradually resume participation, including sport-specific warm-up and cool-down protocols.
